PhD STUDIES at the Institute of Physics

General Information

PhD studies are designed on the one hand to provide strong grounding in highly specialized areas of modern physics and on the other hand to give students opportunity for developing interdisciplinary skills. All that is provided by series of post-graduate courses and frequent seminars in the interdisciplinary environment of the Institute. By active participation in the group seminars the PhD students can learn the art of the scientific presentation. They can choose a supervisor from about 50 senior staff scientists and are fully integrated in the research program of the Institute. The PhD students have been co-authors of approx. 30% of the recent journal papers published by the academic stuff of the Institute. The research covers a broad range of the currently developed areas in: condensed matter physics (experimental and theoretical), molecular physics, nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, statistical physics, astrophysics and cosmology, medical physics, physics of nano- and mesoscopic systems, computer physics. A thesis for the degree of PhD shall normally be completed and defended within 4 years.
